Boys Soccer Sectionals

Here are the boys' soccer breakdowns.

Class AA
First Round
Friday, October 26
S6 Shaker at B3 CBA, 3 p.m.
B5 Schenectady at S4 Bethlehem, 3 p.m.
S8 Columbia at B1 La Salle (Saturday), 6 p.m.
B7 Troy at S2 Guilderland, 3 p.m.

S7 Saratoga at B2 Albany (Thursday) at Bleecker Stadium, 6:30 p.m.
B6 Catholic Central at S3 Colonie, 7 p.m.
Bye - S1 Shenendehowa
Quarterfinals
Tuesday, October 30
Shaker/CBA at S1 Shenendehowa, 3 p.m.
Colum/LSI vs. Sch/Beth at higher seed, 3 p.m.
Troy/G'land vs. Nisky/Amst at higher seed, 3 p.m.
S'toga/Albany vs. CCHS/Colonie at higher seed, 3 p.m.
Semifinals
Thursday, November 1 at Colonie, 5&7 p.m.
Final
Tuesday, November 6 at Colonie, 5 p.m.
Bracket Analysis: Shenendehowa and then the rest of the field - at least that's what it's looked like. Colonie, Guilderland and Bethlehem are all strong. Niskayuna usually plays well in the postseason. Let's see if some Big 10 teams can post some victories in this tradtionally lopsided matchup.

Class A
First Round
Wednesday, October 24
No. 9 Bishop Gibbons at No. 8 Lansingburgh (Thursday), 3 p.m.
No. 11 Hudson Falls at No. 6 Gloversville, 5 p.m.
No. 10 Averill Park at No. 7 Mohonasen, 7 p.m.
Quarterfinals
Saturday, October 27
BG/Burgh at No. 1 Albany Academy, 2 p.m.
No. 5 Glens Falls at No. 4 Burnt Hills, 2 p.m.
HudF/Glov at No. 3 South Glens Falls, 2 p.m.
Mohon/AP at No. 2 Scotia, 2 p.m.
Semifinals
Thursday, November 1 at Queensbury (both at 2:30)
Final
Monday, November 5 at Colonie, 7 p.m.
Bracket Analysis: Albany Academy has gone through the regular season undefeated and is the No. 1 team in New York State, so they are obviously the team to beat. That being said, Burnt Hills is always tough as Scotia and South High will be.

Class B
First Round (Wednesday 10/24 at Thursday 10/25)
No. 9 Hudson at No. 8 Cairo-Durham, Wed. 3 p.m.
No 12 Cohoes at No. 5 Cobleskill, Thurs. 5 p.m.
No. 13 Ravena at No. 4 Schalmont, Thurs. 5 p.m.
No. 14 Broadalbin-Perth at No. 3 Schuylerville, Wed. 3 p.m.
No. 11 Fonda at No. 6 Greenville, Wed. 3 p.m.
No. 10 Johnstown at No. 7 Ichabod Crane, Thurs. 5 p.m.
No. 15 Hoosic Valley at No. 2 Tamarac, Thurs. 5 p.m.
Bye - No. 1 Chatham
Quarterfinals
(Friday 10/26 at Saturday 10/27 at higher seed)
Semifinals
Wednesday, October 31 at Johnstown, 5 & 7 p.m.
Final
Saturday, November 3 at Colonie, 6 p.m.
Bracket Analysis: Chatham is definitely the top team, but I could see Wasaren teams Tamarac or Schuylerville both winning.

Class CC
First Round
Thursday, October 25
No. 9 Corinth at No. 8 Hoosick Falls, 3 p.m.
No. 11 Berne-Knox at No. 6 Greenwich, 3 p.m.
No. 10 Mechanicville at No. 7 Saratoga Catholic, 3 p.m.
Quarterfinals
Thursday (10/25), Friday (10/26), Saturday (10/27)
HooFalls/Corinth at No. 1 Galway, Sat. 2 p.m.
No. 5 Voorheesville at No. 4 Lake George, Thurs. 3 p.m.
B-K/Green at No. 3 Schenectady Christian, Fri. 3 p.m.
Spa/Mech'ville at No. 2 Stillwater, Sat. 2 p.m.
Semifinals
Wednesday, October 31 at Morse Complex, Glens Falls, 3 p.m.
Final
Saturday, November 3 at Colonie, 2 p.m.
Bracket Analysis: Galway is the top team and for good reason as they are ranked the top team in the state. Stillwater should be well-tested after winning the Wasaren League. Those are the top two teams, everyone else will be chasing them.

Class C
First Round
Wednesday, October 24
No. 9 Salem at No. 8 Hadley-Luzerne, 3 p.m.
No. 10 Duanesburg at No. 7 Mayfield, 3 p.m.
Quarterfinals (Thursday 10/25, Friday 10/26 and Saturday 10/27)
Sal/H-L at No. 1 Maple Hill, Fri. 3 p.m.
No. 5 Middleburgh at No. 4 Berlin, Thurs. 3 p.m.
No. 6 Schoharie at No. 3 Waterford, Fri. 3 p.m.
May/Duane at No. 2 Fort Plain, Sat. 2 p.m.
Semifinals
Tuesday, October 30 at Johnstown, 5 & 7 p.m.
Final
Saturday, November 3 at Colonie, 12 p.m
Bracket Analysis: Maple Hill has a strong season and they're the defending state champions, but they did graduate a lot of players from last year and that makes them vulnerable. Can this still win? Oh yeah, but look out for Fort Plain, Berlin and Waterford.

Class D
Play-in game
Wednesday, October 24
No. 9 St. Johnsville at No. 8 Hartford, 3 p.m.
Quarterfinals
Thursday, Oct. 25, Friday, Oct. 26 and Saurday, Oct. 27
St. J/Hart at No. 1 North Warren, Sat. 2 p.m.
No. 5 New Lebanon at No. 4 Fort Ann, Fri. 2 p.m.
No. 6 Northville at No. 3 Argyle, Thurs. 3 p.m.
No. 2 Loudonville Christian at No. 7 Sharon Springs, Fri at N. Colonie, 3 p.m.
Semifinals
Tuesday, October 30 at Morse Field, Glens Falls, 3 p.m.
Final
Saturday, November 3 at Colonie, 4 p.m.
Bracket Analysis: I have to admit I don't know too much about these teams, but Loudonville Christian is always good and North Warren is the top seed, so I would expect them to get to the semis at least.

Girls Soccer Sectionals

So the soccer sectionals are out and games get going later this week. First, we'll take a look at the girls brackets.

Class AA
Friday, October 26
First Round
No. 9 Guilderland at No. 8 Columbia, 3 p.m.
No. 12 Catholic Central at No. 5 Niskayuna, 3 p.m.
No. 13 Albany at No. 4 Ballston Spa, 3 p.m.
No. 14 Troy at No. 3 Shaker, 3 p.m.
No. 11 Schenectady at No. 6 Saratoga, 3 p.m.
No. 10 Amsterdam at No. 7 Queensbury, 3 p.m.
Bye - No. 1 Bethlehem, No. 2 Shenendehowa
Quarterfinals
Tuesday, October 30
Guilderland/Columbia at No. 1 Bethlehem, 3 p.m.
CCHS/Nisky vs. Albany/BSpa at higher seed, 3 p.m.
Troy/Shaker vs. Schen/Saratoga at higher seed, 3 p.m.
Ams/Q'bury at No. 2 Shenendehowa, 7 p.m.
Semifinals
Saturday, November 3 at Broadalbin-Perth, 5&7 p.m.
Final
Wednesday, November 7 at Broadalbin-Perth, 7 p.m.
Bracket Analysis: I'd be surprised if Shen and Bethlehem didn't meet in the final, but I've been surprised before. Watch out for Suburban Council Gold Division Champions Shaker in the No. 3 spot.

Class A
Play-in Game
Wednesday, October 24
No. 9 Glens Falls at No. 8 Gloversville, 7 p.m.
Quarterfinals
Friday, October 26
GF/Glov at No. 1 Burnt Hills, 3 p.m.
No. 5 Mohonasen at No. 4 South Glens Falls, 3 p.m.
No. 6 Lansingburgh at No. 3 Scotia, 3 p.m.
No. 7 Averill Park at No. 2 Holy Names, 3 p.m.
Semifinals
Wednesday, October 31 (one at Amsterdam, one at Broadalbin), 7 p.m.
Final
Friday, November 2 at Broadalbin-Perth, 8 p.m.
Bracket Analysis: When is the last time Burnt Hills hasn't won this Class or at least been a factor? Playing in the Suburban Council just makes them so much better during the year. Scotia and Holy Names have had good seasons, but I think this is the Spartans class to win.

Class B
First Round
Thursday, October 25
No. 16 Bishop Gibbons at No. 1 Ichabod Crane, 7 p.m.
No. 9 Chatham at No. 8 Schuylerville, 3 p.m.
No. 12 Cohoes at No. 5 Greenville, 3 p.m.
No. 13 Hoosic Valley at No. 4 Ravena, 3 p.m.
No. 14 Cobleskill at No. 3 Tamarac, 7 p.m.
No. 11 Coxsackie-Athens at No. 6 Broadalbin-Perth, 7 p.m.
No. 10 Emma Willard at No. 7 Cairo-Durham, 3 p.m.
No. 15 Johnstown at No. 2 Schalmont, 7 p.m.
Quarterfinals
Saturday, October 27
at better seeds, 2 p.m.
Semifinals
Wednesday, October 31 (one at B-P, the other at Amsterdam), 5 p.m.
Final
Friday, November 2 at Broadalbin-Perth, 6 p.m.
Bracket Analysis: There are more than a few teams, who have had good seasons in this bracket. Ichabod Crane is very good, Schalmont is the defending champion Tamarac went to the final last year, Ravena has a lot of fire power and those are just the top four seeds. The B's are really wide open.

Class CC
First Round
Friday, October 26
No. 9 Greenwich at No. 8 Cambridge, 3 p.m.
No. 11 Bene-Knox at No. 6 Galway, 3 p.m.
No. 10 Voorheesville at No. 7 Lake George, 3 p.m.
Quarterfinals
Tuesday, October 30
Cam/Green at No. 1 Hoosick Falls, 3 p.m.
No. 5 Mayfield at No. 4 Albany Academy, 3 p.m.
B-K/Galway at No. 3 Stillwater, 3 p.m.
LG/V'Ville at No. 2 Mechanicville, 3 p.m.
Semifinals
Thursday, November 1 at Broadalbin-Perth, 4&6 p.m.
Final
Saturday, November 3 at Broadalbin, 3 p.m.
Bracket Analysis: Look at this bracket. First of all, Hoosick Falls and Mechanicville are ranked No. 1 & 2 in the state and then Stillwater, who went to the State Final Four, a year ago, is No. 3. Albany Academy has also had a good season.

Class C
First Round
Friday, October 26
No. 9 Duanesburg at No. 8 Berlin, 3 p.m.
No. 11 Salem at No. 6 Whitehall, 3 p.m.
No. 10 Rensselaer at No. 7 Canajoharie, 3 p.m.
Quarterfinals
Tuesday, October 30
Ber/Duane at No. 1 Maple Hill, 3 p.m.
No. 5 Waterford at No. 4 Fort Plain, 3 p.m.
White/Salem at No. 3 Schoharie, 3 p.m.
Cajo/Renss at No. 2 Middleburgh, 3 p.m.
Semifinals
Thursday, November 1 at Amsterdam, 4&6 p.m.
Final
Saturday, November 3 at Broadalbin-Perth, 1 p.m.
Bracket Analysis: I would have to think Maple Hill is the clear-cut favorite in the top spot. Schoharie and Middleburgh are always tough come playoff time.

Class D
Semifinals
Wednesday, October 31

No. 4 Sharon Springs vs. No. 1 New Lebanon at Amsterdam, 3 p.m.
No. 3 Fort Ann vs. No. 2 Northville at Broadalbin-Perth, 3 p.m.
Final
Friday, November 2 at Brodalbin-Perth, 4 p.m.
Bracket Analysis: Well there's not much to analyze. With only four teams, each team is only one win from the final.

As you can see, we should have some real good competition in the girls' tournament. Who do you guys think will play well. Who's going to win each section. Let me know.

I'll be back later to post the boys' pairings and what I think about them.

Knightmare Averted - Lansingburgh is in

The Lansingburgh Knights are in the playoffs after a decision by the Section II transfer comittee reversed their earlier decision from a week ago. The Knights will host Mohonasen on Friday, a rematch from Week 2, a 42-14 Lansingburgh victory. The pairings for the Class A football sectional tournament are listed below.

Class A
I4 Mohonasen (1-6) at II1 Lansingburgh (6-1), 7 p.m.
II3 Glens Falls (4-3) at I2 Bishop Maginn (5-2), 7 p.m.
I3 Averill Park (2-5) at II2 Amsterdam (6-1), 7 p.m.
II4 Gloversville (3-4) at I1 Burnt Hills (6-1), 7 p.m.

This ends a week-long odyssey and most notably the last few days when it didn't seem like anyone wanted to make a decision regarding the eligibility of senior tailback NyQuan McGirt and the future of the 2007 Lansingburgh season. Hopefully, now we can just get ready for Week 1 of the postseason.

Sectionals Pairings Released

The Sectional pairings for football have been released with no real surprises. The only thing that is still up in air is if Lansingburgh will be allowed to participate and because of that two sets of brackets were released one with them in and the other with them not included. That is supposed to be figured out on Monday and hopefully for all of the parties involved, it will be because there's no sense in dragging this out for the whole week, especially when teams need to get prepared for their opponents. With that said, here are the pairings....

Class AA
L4 Schenectady (4-3) at E1 Guilderland (6-1), 7 p.m.
E3 Ballston Spa (6-1) at L2 Troy (6-1), 1:30 p.m.
L3 Colonie (4-3) at E2 Shenendehowa (6-1), 7 p.m.
E4 CBA (3-4) at L1 La Salle (6-1), 7 p.m.

Class A
If Burgh in
I4 Mohonasen (1-6) at II1 Lansingburgh (6-1), 7 p.m.
II3 Glens Falls (4-3) at I2 Bishop Maginn (5-2), 7 p.m.
I3 Averill Park (2-5) at II2 Amsterdam (6-1), 7 p.m.
II4 Gloversville (3-4) at I1 Burnt Hills (6-1), 7 p.m.

Class A

If Burgh out
I4 Mohonasen (1-6) at II1 Amsterdam (6-1), 7 p.m.
II3 Gloversville (3-4) at I2 Bishop Maginn (5-2), 7 p.m.
I3 Averill Park (2-5) at II2 Glens Falls (6-1), 7 p.m.
II4 South Glens Falls (1-6) at I1 Burnt Hills (6-1), 7 p.m.

Class B
R4 Hudson (2-5) at W1 Cobleskill (7-0), 7 p.m.
W3 Hudson Falls (5-2) at R2 Albany Academy (4-3), 1:30 p.m.
R3 Cohoes (4-3) at W2 Broadalbin-Perth (6-1), 7 p.m.
W4 Fonda (4-3) at R1 Ravena (6-1), 7 p.m.

Class C
N4 Hoosick Falls (4-3) at S1 Watervliet (6-1), 1:30 p.m.
S3 Coxsackie-Athens (5-2) at N2 Schuylerville (6-1), 7 p.m.
N3 Corinth (5-2) at S2 Chatham (6-1), 7 p.m.
S4 Voorheesville (5-2) at N1 Cambridge (7-0), 1:30 p.m.

Class D
Canajoharie (7-0) bye
#5 Warrensburg (3-4) at #4 Whitehall (3-3), 1:30 p.m.
#6 Salem (1-5) at #3 Rensselaer (5-2), 7 p.m.
#7 Bishop Gibbons (0-6) at #2 Fort Edward (5-2), 1:30 p.m.

How about in Class C where you have three teams with records of 5-2 going on the road for their first playoff game and in Class AA where you have a first round matchup of Troy (6-1) and Ballston Spa (6-1). Another intriguing matchup pits La Salle against rival CBA in a game that is usually played in the regular season for the Sabre, but with the new division alignments, they did not play this year. Last year, La Salle won the Sabre and CBA won the Class AA Super Bowl.

Who do you guys think will make a long sectional run? Will there be any upsets??

The Game

Well, we're less than 24 hours from the final week of the football regular season. This means it's time to make a final go at looking at the big matchup in Troy - The Collar City Cup sponsored by The Record. I've decided to break down the game in the three aspects of the game and see which team has the edge.

Offense: Both teams offenses have shown that they can score. La Salle has a great passer in Jared Henkel and a good running back in Marquis Terrell. With the big guys up front, the Cadets have had one of the top offenses in Section II. Troy quarterback Zach Dolan is a good leader and the Flying Horses have been able to establish the running game with whoever gets the ball even though, their best rusher is Fred Fitch, who missed last week's game with a bruise on his shin. Although I like both offenses, I'd say La Salle's is more dangerous. Edge: La Salle

Defense: Troy's defense seems to have the big edge here. La Salle coach Al Rapp said himself he didn't like how the defense has been playing. They gave up 37 points last week against Schenectady, which is 30 more points than Troy's defense has given up in the past two weeks. Troy does a good job of putting pressure on the quarterback, while also being able to stop the pass. The Cadets defense will need to step up, but right now the Flying Horses defense is superior. Edge: Troy

Coaching: Both coaching staffs are veteran and very good. Troy's Jack Burger has returned and so far, has the Flying Horses undefeated. He's won a couple of state titles and his staff has been with him for a long time. Rapp coached at Cambridge before coming to La Salle and he's got a good staff as well, but I would give Troy a slight advantage. Edge: Slightly Troy

I'm not going to make a prediction on the game because I'm covering it, but if I had to choose a winner, I think I would go with La Salle just because of the big strike ability of their offense. If they get down, they have the fire power to come back. I think Troy's defense will have to play better than La Salle's in order to win.

The photos were shot by Jim Carras. On the top, are seniors Josh Brown and Jared Henkel of La Salle, hoping to get their hands back on the Collar City Cup. Below, we have seniors Bob Vogel, Matt Marsh and Anthony Testo, who are hoping to keep the Cup with Troy High.

Terrell honored by USA Today

Marquis Terrell has had a breakout junior season. Just think he doesn't turn 16 until November and he's over 1,000 yards on the season with 19 touchdowns.

The La Salle Institute's running back who rushed for 365 yards and seven touchdowns in a 61-37 victory over Schenectady was honored today by USA Today, who mention Terrell as one of their MaxPreps other top offensive performers from last week.

Things will get tougher for Terrell and his Cadets teammates when they take on Troy, who is only allowing an average of 13.8 points per game, on Friday for the division title.

Starting off

Well, we're finally getting into the digital age and that of course means starting our blogs.

Even though things aren't 100% error-free, I wanted to get things going because this is a great time of the fall season. It's the last week of the football regular season and soccer sectionals are just around the corner.

I was at the Troy High game today - the second half needed to be played after bad weather interrupted Saturday afternoon. Even though veteran coach Jack Burger wasn't sure how his team would respond after attending the Homecoming dance the night before, his team came out rolling.

The Flying Horses won convincingly 35-7 and after watching La Salle Institute's 61-37 over Schenectady and Marquis Terrell's (seen below) seven touchdowns on Friday, it seems as if both teams will be ready for Friday night, which marks the 7th annual Collar City Cup.

I've been to one Cup game, last year at Troy when the Flying Horses won 29-21, but with Troy (5-0, 6-0) and La Salle (5-0, 5-1) both undefeated in division play and ranked in the state, this game obviously has plenty on the line.

On top of the division title and the top seed for the playoffs, the winner also takes home the Collar City Cup, which is sponsored by The Record and the bragging rights of being the best football team in the city of Troy.

I'll be writing about this game the entire week, but I want to know what you think. Who will win this game and who brings home the Cup?

That's not the only big game on this, the final week of the regular season. How about these games?

Cambridge @ Corinth
Lansingburgh @ Glens Falls
Burnt Hills @ Bishop Maginn
Guilderland @ Shenendehowa
Hoosick Falls @ Greenwich
Stillwater @ Schuylerville
Mechanicville @ Watervliet
Voorheesville @ Coxsackie-Athens

Let me know what you think about this final week of the season and what teams you think will make a long run in sectionals.
