Top 10 Siena & UAlbany moments of 2011

As we do when all years come to an end, we look back at the best performances and try to figure out what was the best.

I've covered Siena and UAlbany basketball for five seasons and put together what I think are the Top 10 moments of 2011.

See what you think...and let me know if I'm wrong (I'm not).

10. EVAN HYMES SCORES 30 (Nov. 19)
Siena point guard Evan Hymes has burst onto the scene this season. In just his second game, the diminutive point guard, who is starting because of a season-ending injury to Rakeem Brookins, went off. Hymes scored 30 points in a 65-53 victory that started the Siena 2011-12 season with back-to-back victories. Hymes was 9-for-17 from the floor and 9-for-14 from the free throw line.

9. MIKE BLACK DROPS CAREER-HIGH 26 ON MAINE (Feb. 27)
UAlbany's point guard is known more for distrubuting, but in the season finale last year Black torched Maine for a career-high 26 points in a 81-77 overtime victory. Black hit five 3-pointers, but also finished with five assists in the win, while playing 40 of the 45 minutes in the game.

8. CLARENCE JACKSON COMES OFF BENCH TO LIGHT UP MARIST (Jan. 14)
Clarence Jackson dealt with a long list of injuries during his senior season, but on this night he put the setbacks behind him and gave a clutch performance. Jackson finished with 19 points and hit five 3-pointers at the McCann Center as Siena took down rival Marist 66-59. Jackson finished 5-for-7 from beyond the arc.

7. UALBANY CLOBBERS BINGHAMTON 76-37 (Jan. 20)
The Great Danes and Bearcats have a good rivalry, both being SUNY schools. On this night, UAlbany let their state rivals have it, setting new Division I win margin, winning by 39, 76-37, over Binghamton. Mike Black led four Great Danes in double figures with 15 points. The Bearcats made just 12 field goals and shot 21 percent (12-57) from the floor.

6. ARONHALT & AMBROSE GO 20-20 on UMBC (Jan. 26)
Logan Aronhalt really burst onto the scene last season, overcoming a lot of injuries to have a breakthrough campaign. In this game, Aronhalt lit up University of Maryland-Baltimore Country for 28 points, while senior Tim Ambrose finished with 25 points in the 66-63 victory, down in Baltimore. Aronhalt and Ambrose combined to shoot 19-for-35 (54.3%) from the field in the game.

5. UALBANY TAKES TALENTS TO MADISON SQUARE GARDEN (Feb. 11)
While this game wasn't a victory for the Great Danes, the UAlbany players got the thrill of a lifetime, as the team took the floor to play at the world's most famous arena. Boston University picked up the 63-44 win, but it's a moment that the Great Danes and Terriers both will remember forever. Tim Ambrose led the way for UAlbany with 13 points.

4. RYAN ROSSITER BECOMES SIENA'S TOP REBOUNDER (Feb. 7)
Ryan Rossiter broke a lot of records and had a terrific senior season for Siena. On this night, Rossiter only put up 23 points and 20 rebounds in a 76-69 loss to Loyola (Md.). In the process, Rossiter became the Saints all-time leading rebounder, passing Lee Matthews ('93). Rossiter, who ended his career with 1,151 boards, finished with nine offensive rebounds on this night.

3. GERARDO SUERO DROPS 31 ON SYRACUSE (Nov. 15)
Gerardo Suero really burst onto the scene this season, proving that he is one of the top newcomers in the America East and possibly the country. UAlbany lost on this night to Syracuse, 98-74, but Suero scored a game-high 31 points against the Orange's vaunted zone defense. Suero was 9-for-16 from the floor and 11-for-12 from the free throw line, in just his third game for the Great Danes.

2. O.D. ANOSIKE LETS HIS PLAY DO THE TALKING (Dec. 5)
Siena junior center O.D. Anosike caught the attention of nearly everyone in the Captial District when he said he thought Siena was still the favorite, heading into the Albany Cup matchup. Anosike backed it up, scoring 21 points and grabbing 18 rebounds as the Saints regained the bragging rights with a 64-60 victory. Following the game, Coach Mitch Buonaguro said he hoped Anosike would tweet less, while Anosike who hadn't tweeted the original statement, was just happy with the victory.

1. RYAN ROSSITER GIVES HOMETOWN CROWD ONE LAST THRILL (Feb. 27)
Ryan Rossiter gave the hometown Albany crowd one more thing to cheer about, in the final home game of his career. Rossiter finished with a career-high 34 points and 11 rebounds in a 81-73 victory over Marist. There's not much more you can say about Rossiter, as a week later, he was honored with the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Player of the Year award.

Honorable Mention:
  • Ryan Rossiter 26 pts. 15 reb. in victory over Iona – Jan. 3 (Siena 1,000th win)
  • Siena's Jonathan Breeden scores 24 pts vs. Iona in loss – Feb. 11
  • UAlbany's Jayson Guerrier 28 pts, 10 reb. vs. Monmouth – Nov. 21
  • Gerardo Suero 29 pts. vs. Colgate – Dec. 7
  • Ambrose 15 pts 14 reb. 52-50 @ Stony (3rd double-double, career-high rebounds) - Jan. 17
  • Luke Devlin 11 pts & 11 reb. In victory over Hartford – Feb. 5
  • Ambrose 22 pts in victory over Stony (past 1,500 career pts) – Feb. 14

UAlbany chosen 4th at America East Media Day

The University at Albany men's basketball team finished tied for third last season in the America East and there are hopes for an even higher finish around the Great Danes' camp this year.

That's not exactly what the rest of the coaches around the league are thinking, selecting UAlbany fourth in the 2011-12 America East preseason poll, on Thursday, at the conference's media day, in Hartford, Conn.

The Great Danes are selected to finish behind Boston University, Stony Brook and Vermont.

UAlbany finished last season with a 16-16 overall record, 9-7 in the America East.

Tim Ambrose, the team's leading scorer graduated, but the Great Danes return the core of the squad, a team looking for a strong season.

The UAlbany women's team is selected to finish fifth under second-year coach Katie Abrahamson-Henderson.

Junior guard Ebone Henry was selected to the preseason all-conference team.

Aussies come from down under to Albany

Peter Hooley's first view of the University at Albany campus was a dark one.

That' s not because Hooley wasn't happy to be in Upstate New York, rather it was midnight and he had just finished three-day journey to arrive at UAlbany.

Hooley, who had never been on the UAlbany campus, Sam Rowley and Luke Devlin all flew in from Australia and it was quite the trip.

Hooley departed his hometown of South Adelaide on Sunday and flew into Sydney to stay with Rowley and Devlin for the night.

The three boarded a plane and landed in Los Angeles at 8 a.m. on Tuesday morning. Their flight to Chicago was delayed two hours. Once the reached the Windy City, their flight was delayed three and half more hours and they finally got to UAlbany on midnight, Wednesday morning where they were picked up by one of the coaches and taken to their dorms.

"You always hope to sleep on the plane, but that didn't happen," said Hooley, after Wednesday's afternoon practice.

Hooley said that he and Rowley asked Devlin many questions about college hoops in America, on the plane. Devlin, who was an America East All-Rookie selection, learned a lot over the past season about the difference in play from Australia to the U.S.

Having three players from Australia will help all of them feel more comfortable, especially when it snows.

“It’s like I’m bringing a bit of family here,” Hooley said. “Our families are so far away and especially when I’m rooming with them, it’s just like living at home.”

The Aussies and the rest of the Great Danes made it on to the floor for the practice, the first of 13 before the team leaves for Canada on Aug. 18.

"This was a good day for us," UAlbany coach Will Brown said.

Brown mentioned that the two biggest reasons Canada was chosen as the destination for the squad were cost and distance of travel.

There will be some different rules on the court for UAlbany (24-second shot clock, 8 seconds to get ball across half court, no inbounding ball into the backcourt from frontcourt), but they hope this trip will get them on the same page.

"I feel like this is a good opportunity for us to build our chemistry," said junior point guard Mike Black.

While the Great Danes have four returning starters (only Tim Ambrose graduated), the team has six new faces.

Here is the schedule for games.

Friday, Aug. 19 - at University of Quebec at Montreal, 7 p.m.
Saturday, Aug. 20 - at McGill University, 7 p.m.
Monday, Aug. 22 - at Dawson College All-Stars, 7:30 p.m.
Wednesday, Aug. 24 - at University of Ottawa, 8 p.m.
Thursday, Aug. 25 - at Carleton University, 7 p.m.

UAlbany's Allen moving on

ALBANY - Billy Allen will be playing his last game in SEFCU Arena on Wednesday evening.

Allen is just a fourth-year junior, but the dual major in physics and mathematics, will graduate in May and then move on to the next chapter in his life after the season concludes.

Allen, who redshirted his freshman season because of a back injury, made the decision that he will not return to the UAlbany team and will instead start an internship at an engineering firm in Syracuse and hopes to then land a job with the company.

“It’ll be said,” said Allen, who will be honored along with Tim Ambrose and Fran Urli before the game against UMBC. “But I’m taking another step in my life and coach understands that.”

Allen waited to tell coach Will Brown because he thought it might be a distraction.

“Nowadays, anytime a kid can graduate college with a job in hand, you’d be foolish not to explore or take it, especially if it’s a good job,” Brown said.

Allen is only averaging 1.3 points per game, but he hit some big free throw to seal Sunday's victory over Binghamton.

"There's not enough kids out there like Billy," Brown said. "He just wants to be a part of it and he's going to do really well for himself."

Allen is hoping that the team, which has won two in a row can get hot and do something special.

“March is that time of the year to be playing well,” Allen said. “I don’t think a lot of teams will want to be playing us in a week or two.”

Danes show their fight against UMBC

ALBANY - Will Brown told his team before Wednesday's night matchup with UMBC that it was a separation game.

The Great Danes, who are right smack in the middle of the nine-team league, came out slow and trailed by 12 at halftime.

All season, the UAlbany players and Coach Brown have talked about how this is a different team than last season.

In the second half, they proved it.

The Great Danes rallied to post a 66-63 victory and even their conference mark at 4-4.

“Coach gave us a good speech and that got us pumped up for the second half,” said sophomore point guard Mike Black. “We just came out, played aggressive and a lot better than the first half.”

The comeback ties the program's largest come-from-behind road victory, as they trailed by 14, 46-32, with 16:46 remaining.

“It showed our character,” said Black.

UAlbany has won their last three games and already has twice as many league wins as all of last year, when they finished 2-14 in the America East.

“It just shows that we have a lot of fight in us and we’re going to play to the last buzzer,” said senior guard Tim Ambrose.

The Great Danes have won their last two conference road games, after dropping their first two of the year.

“I think it was a good feeling for our guys that they had to deal with some adversity on the road and they found a way to get it done,” said Brown.

UAlbany hosts rival Vermont, Saturday at SEFCU Arena, at 7 p.m.

Despite loss, UAlbany still feeling good

ALBANY - One day after UAlbany's first conference loss to Vermont, the Great Danes were trying to focus on what's in front of them.

It was likely the biggest game of the season for UAlbany because of the early-season America East Conference implications and that may have gotten to the team, according to coach Will Brown.

“Maybe Coach Brown telling (the players) that this is a good measuring stick for us. This is the best team on paper, based on non-conference. Big game, great environment and I think this group may have gotten caught up in that and pressed a little bit too much.”

The Catamounts won for the seventh time on their home floor and are now 11-3 overall, after beating the Great Danes 60-48.

“They’re a great team,” said senior guard Tim Ambrose. “They’re solid and they play together. They don’t beat themselves.”

UAlbany didn't play very well, but they still like their chances against Vermont any anyone else in the league.

“I feel like we can compete with anybody,” Ambrose said. “It all depends on that night and how teams come out to play. Vermont, yesterday, was the better team and they deserved to win.”

“Vermont’s a great team,” added sophomore captain Logan Aronhalt. “They’re very well-coached and they play well together, but I like our chances in the next game. As bad as we were playing, we were right there at times. I think, if we can get it going a little better offensively next time we play, I think we can win the game.”

UAlbany's big three(-headed monster)

ALBANY - Mike Black coined the trio's nickname following Saturday's victory - the three-headed monster.

Black, Logan Aronhalt and Tim Ambrose combined for 56 of UAlbany's points on a 77-57 victory.

"They enjoy playing with each other," said UAlbany coach Will Brown.

The trio got started going early and never looked back.

“I think we were feeling good and taking good shots,” Aronhalt said.

If all three guys are playing to their potential, the Great Danes will be in good shape.

“Ambrose is sort of their guy,” said Mount St. Mary's coach Robert Burke. “Those other guys can be just as much the guy when they need them though.”

A new Ambrose for UAlbany

ALBANY - Tim Ambrose was having a tough practice on Wednesday afternoon.

It took just one comment from his coach to get him back on track.

"We don't want the old Timmy."

“He looked at me and nodded and he got back into the swing of things,” said UAlbany coach Will Brown. “He’s really working hard.”

Amrbose has been a big reason for the Great Danes' success so far this season.

The senior guard is averaging second-best 17.1 points and 5.1 rebounds per game for UAlbany, which is 5-6 this season as they head into Saturday's game against Mount St. Mary's.

“Timmy’s been a model of consistency so far,” Brown said. “This is the most consistent basketball he’s played in his career and it’s the best basketball he’s played in his career.”

Ambrose has been more "focused", according to his head coach and is becoming more of a "student of the game".

“He deserves to have a good senior year and that’s also going to make us a lot better,” Brown said.

Ambrose sits 16th on the school's all-time scoring list with 1,239 career points, just 30 points behind Dan Croutier (1981-85), to move into the Top 15.

“I think Tim’s playing really well,” said sophomore guard Logan Aronhalt. “I think he’s a completely different player from last year, shooting the ball well and making great decision for us. We’re a tough matchup with us two on the wing."

Aronhalt's success could be another reason why Ambrose has improved. Opposing teams need to account for Aronhalt, who is the team's leading scorer at 17.8 points per game.

“The guys that Tim has around him now, are perfect for him to succeed,” Brown said.

Ambrose and the Great Danes hope the success continues.

Ambrose earns America East honors

Tim Ambrose was named America East Player of the Week on Monday for the second straight time.

UAlbany's senior guard averaged 18.0 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists in two games last week.

Ambrose also hit the go-ahead shot against Central Connecticut on Saturday, in the Great Danes 64-63 victory.

Ambrose, who was a third-team all-conference selection in 2009, scored 15 points and grabbed four rebounds in Monday's loss to Yale.

UAlbany 37, Central Connecticut 22 (half)

ALBANY - The University at Albany Great Danes look like a different team.

As the PA announcer said before the game, these are the Albany Cup Champion-Great Danes.

UAlbany was led by senior Tim Ambrose, who finished the first 20 minutes 15 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Mike Black added nine, as the Great Danes shot 51.7 percent (15-29) from the field.

This looks like a different team than the beginning of the season. UAlbany even led 37-19 at one point.

Coach Will Brown said he expected a good performance because the team is at full strength at home, for the first time since the season-opener.

The Blue Devils aren't doing much offensively, but they are led by Robby Ptacek, who has eight points.

UAlbany, Siena post victories

Sophomore Logan Aronhalt scored a career-high 27 points and also grabbed 10 rebounds as the University at Albany posted a 72-46 non-conference victory over Fairleigh Dickinson.

The Great Danes also got 13 points from senior Tim Ambrose and 10 more from sophomore Jon Iati.

"Our team defense was how we won," UAlbany coach Will Brown said. "We are getting better and more comfortable playing the zone and contesting jump shots."

Mike Scott scored 23 points for the Knights (0-2), but no other Fairleigh Dickinson player scored in double figures.

Out in Boston, Siena picked up their first win of the season, and an impressive one in that, as they defeated Northeastern 84-68.

The victory is coach Mitch Buonaguro's first win as head coach for the Saints (1-2).

The Huskies (2-1) are a quality team.

"That’s as good a road win as we’ve had since we’ve been here, from start to finish,” Buonaguro said afterwards. “That was a great road win. I thought Northeastern was a really good team. Our guys were focused, they executed the game plan, they were tough. Our effort was phenomenal. That’s a great win. I couldn’t be happier for the seniors, and the rest of the kids. I thought it was total domination actually.”

Ryan Rossiter and Clarence Jackson combined for 52 points and that was really all Siena needed.

Both teams are in action Tuesday. Siena plays national runner-up Butler. UAlbany hosts Iona.

American 34, UAlbany 23 (half)

ALBANY - UAlbany doesn't exactly have the same energy that they had Friday against Cornell.

The Great Danes came out shooting just 1-for-10 from the field, but actually trailed just 8-4.

They started making shots and the Patriot League favorite Eagles made some more.

UAlbany finished the half 9-for-26 (34.6%), led by Tim Ambrose, who scored 11 points off the bench.

American was paced by Vlad Moldoveanu, who scored seven points. The Eagles also hit four 3-pointers.

I don't usually get on the refs (if I'm not watching sports at home that is), but there have been some awfully strange calls, including the one where the ref called the ball out off Logan Aronhalt (right in front of us and legendary UAlbany coach Doc Sauers, who evaluates the referees). I could clearly see the ball went off the American player (I assume Doc did too).

The ref then made Aronhalt go get the ball (injury to insult, I guess).

UAlbany first reactions of Cornell game

ALBANY - I think it's clear to see that this team is much improved from last year's squad.

Heck, it only took me a couple of minutes to figure that out as the Great Danes led for most of the first half.

Some other points.

Mike Black is likely out for the American game on Monday. If it's a high ankle sprain, he might not travel to Atlanta for Wednesday's game with Georgia Tech.

UAlbany shot the ball much better - 52 percent for the game (25-48). They were 10-for-18 (55%) with Black in there.

John Puk was every where early. Coach Brown said it was his fault for not continuing to go in to the big fella. I saw Puk after the game and he told Coach Brown that his Achilles was sore, but what can you expect after playing 22 minutes. He should be a force in the conference schedule.

Also, a great positive was the play of Luke Devlin, who scored 10 points and grabbed nine rebounds.

Some negatives. The late game situation wasn't the best.

Brown said he wanted to get the ball in Iati's hands following the missed free throw. It didn't and Ambrose drove into the lane and shot a two, when the team needed three.

Also, 16 turnovers isn't great, but Brown said it wasn't too, too bad for the first night.

As Logan Aronhalt said, "Most of the mistakes can be corrected."

UAlbany doesn't have much time before American comes calling on Monday.

I'll have more up, with video from Coach Brown and women's coach Abrahamson-Henderson after the women's team defeated Brown 64-54.

UAlbany vs. Cornell Gameday

ALBANY - It's opening night for the University at Albany Great Danes.

Hopefully a decent crowd turns out tonight for the men's and women's doubleheader.

ESPN Simulation gives this game to Cornell, 74-61, and gives UAlbany just a 16.6 percent chance of winning tonight.

Of course, they have Chris Wroblewski scoring 23 points and he may not play because of a sprained ankle.

UAlbany there's hope, too. To show how much this prediction knows, it says the Great Danes will be led in scoring by transfer Theo Hatcher, who will score 11.

Here are some stories to read (if you're not already traveling to or at the game).

Troy Record advance

Ithaca Journal story on Cornell

EDIT: In my UAlbany season preview that ran Thursday, I said senior Tim Ambrose needed 28 points to reach 1,000 for his career. Not sure where I was looking when I was adding up the stats because Ambrose already has 1,051 points and sits 27th on the school's all-time scoring list.

Purple/Gold Scrimmage Notes

Luke Devlin had some extra motivation to shoot the ball on Friday night at the Purple/Gold scrimmage.

University at Albany coach Will Brown told his freshman from Australia that if he didn't shoot, Brown would make the whole team run laps.

"Our expectations for him a very high," Brown said. "The problem with Luke is he's unselfish to a fault."

Playing for Team Purple, Devlin finished with seven points and five rebounds (from my count - see below) and one missed halfcourt shot at the buzzer of the first "half."

I was very impressed with Devlin, although the 6-foot-8 forward did tweak his elbow in the second "half" of the scrimmage.

When Logan Aronhalt missed a last-second shot, Purple escaped with a 38-36 victory.

I tweeted (@AndrewSantillo) that Purple was my 3-point favorite, once I saw the rosters and in my defense, I was pretty close to hitting it on the head.

Anyway, I was impressed with Devlin, Aronhalt's shooting and the long-distance shooting (the two teams combined for 10 three's).

I wasn't as impressed with Derrek Tartt, who seems to have slid down the depth chart after coming on towards the midseason point last season. He only took two shots, making one.

Sophomore Mike Black and Aronhalt each scored 14 points.

"I'm just going to play my game," Black said. "Every day, I'm going to try to make a name for myself and improve every day."

Black is one of six sophomores, who got a lot of playing time last year and are looking to make experience turn into wins this year.

"Last year was a tough season, but we got a lot of experience," Black said. "That can only help us this year."

The team did have a two-hour practice, earlier in the morning and Brown said he could see that his team was tired.

"When you get tired, I think it's easy to settle for jump shots," Brown said. "I think we did a little too much of that today."

I was also impressed with Jacob Iati's play.

At 5-10, he may not be the biggest kid, but he played pretty well, opposite Black at the point.

"Jacob makes open shots," Brown said. "He's tough as nails and every time we walk into the gym, I know what type of effort I'm going to get from him. He never ever wavers on his effort and he's a gym rat."

Iati canned two 3's early in the game, bringing back not so far away images of older brother Jon doing the same thing for the Great Danes.

"His brother was a tough cookie, who had a great career for us," Brown said.

On the injury front, Brown said that Ralph Watts had missed 5 1/2 weeks, but somehow between rushing all over the place, I neglected to ask what for.

Senior Tim Ambrose looked pretty good, scoring 10 points, considering he didn't do anything in the weeks leading up to the start of practice because of a groin injury.

UNOFFICIAL STATS (so unofficial that I somehow have purple scoring 39 points)
