Talor Battle basketball camp at Troy High

Mike McMahon/The Record
Two of the biggest names to recently play high school basketball in this area, Talor Battle and Jimmer Fredette, were at Troy High on Tuesday.

Battle (left), who helped lead Bishop Maginn to the 2006 New York State Class AA title game, is holding his basketball camp at Troy and his former AAU teammate, Fredette, who starred at Glens Falls was in town.

Here is the story.

I also had a chance to catch up with Battle's brother, Taran Buie, who hopes to play at Siena this upcoming season.

REPORT: Taran Buie headed to Siena

The Siena men's basketball roster continues to evolve, as the Jimmy Patsos era begins its third month.

CBS-6 Albany reported Wednesday afternoon that former Bishop Maginn standout Taran Buie will join the Siena program next season.

Buie, a 6-foot-2 guard, who just finished his sophomore season, left Hofstra two months ago, citing personal reasons.

Buie started 26 games this past season for the Pride, averaging 12.4 points 3.6 rebounds and 1.6 assist per game. Hofstra struggled this season, finishing just 7-25, which led to coach Mo Cassara being fired.

Buie played with older brother, Talor Battle, at both Bishop Maginn and then Penn State. Battle and Buie were teammates on Bishop Maginn’s 2006-07 New York State Class AA runner-up squad.

Buie lasted just one season with the Nittany Lions. He played in just 11 games during the 2010-11 season, averaging 5.8 points and 2.0 rebounds in 15.2 minutes per game. Off the court, he had his issues, being suspended from the program for a violation of team rules, while also being cited for disorderly conduct.

A highly touted player coming out of high school, Buie was ranked the No. 17 shooting guard in the Class of 2010, his senior year of high school, by Scout.com. Buie, who averaged 20.8 points per game his only season at State College (Pa.) High, was heavily recruited by Notre Dame and Maryland.

Penn State's Buie in trouble again

Former Bishop Maginn star Taran Buie is in the news again.

Again, it's for all of the wrong reasons.

The Penn State University basketball player, who was suspended from the team in December, was involved in a fight on St. Patrick's day.

Buie, 19, was arrested along with one other basketball player and two football players.

Here is a link to the report.

Buie's brother, Talor Battle (who also played at Bishop Maginn), just finished up one of the most successful Big Ten career's, scoring more than 2,000 points and leading his team to the NCAA tournament.

The Battle is over

Talor Battle hit a 3-pointer to tie his team's first round NCAA tournament game with 11 seconds to play, but Temple's Juan Fernandez ended Penn State's season and Battle's college career with a shot just before the buzzer in Tuscon, Arizona.

This was the first and last NCAA tournament game for Battle, the former star from Bishop Maginn High School in Albany.

Battle, Fredette return to school

Former Section II stars Talor Battle and Jimmer Fredette will return to their respective universities for their senior season after testing the NBA Draft waters.

Battle, a former Bishop Maginn star and The Record's 2006-07 Boys Basketball Player of the Year, announced Saturday that he will return for his senior season at Penn State University.

Battle was one of the top point guard in the Big 10 last season, averaging 18.5 points per game.

Battle's younger brother Taran Buie, also a former start at Bishop Maginn, will begin his collegiate career next season with the Nittany Lions.

Fredette will return to Brigham Young for his senior season.

The Glens Falls native injured his quad in a workout with the New York Knicks on Friday.

Fredette and the Cougars will play a regular season game against the University of Vermont at the Glens Falls Civic Center during the 2010-11 season.

Both players had until Saturday's 5 p.m. deadline to withdraw their names or remain eligible for the 2010 NBA Draft, which takes place June 24 at Madison Square Garden.

Battle scores 1,000th point

Penn State junior Talor Battle became the 29th player in school history to surpass the 1,000-point mark for his career on Thursday, but the Nittany Lions fell to UNC-Wilmington in the first round of the Charleston Classic.

Battle was The Record's Boys' Basketball Player of the Year in 2007 after leading Bishop Maginn High School to the Class AA New York State title game.

Battle, who averaged 26.7 points per game in his senior season with the Golden Griffins, was a first team All-Big Ten selection last season and is a first team preseason pick this year.

Glens Falls native Fredette on SI.com

I had a chance to cover Glens Falls native Jimmer Fredette a couple of times during his high school career.

It's great that he is doing so well at BYU in his sophomore season.

Fredette and the Cougars will kick off NCAA Tournament coverage tomorrow when they take on ninth-seed Texas A&M at 12:30.

The story also mentions former Section II standout and current Penn State guard Talor Battle and the Albany City Rocks.
