Jimmer mania

Wednesday night will be one of the most unique non-conference basketball game in recent memory.

Brigham Young University will take on the University of Vermont at the Glens Falls Civic Center.

The game will be aired nationally on CBS College Sports.

This game will take place for one reason - Jimmer Fredette.

The Cougars senior guard grew up in Glens Falls and this game will be called Hometown Classic.

Fredette was selected as a preseason All-American and has helped BYU reach the NCAA Tournament last season and defeat Florida in double overtime.

Fredette also is Section II's all-time leading scorer.
Fredette is in the Top 10 of BYU's all-time scoring list.

The 2006-07 Glens Falls Indians team went 25-2 and reached the Class A New York State title game, which was played in the Glens Falls Civic Center.

Battle, Fredette return to school

Former Section II stars Talor Battle and Jimmer Fredette will return to their respective universities for their senior season after testing the NBA Draft waters.

Battle, a former Bishop Maginn star and The Record's 2006-07 Boys Basketball Player of the Year, announced Saturday that he will return for his senior season at Penn State University.

Battle was one of the top point guard in the Big 10 last season, averaging 18.5 points per game.

Battle's younger brother Taran Buie, also a former start at Bishop Maginn, will begin his collegiate career next season with the Nittany Lions.

Fredette will return to Brigham Young for his senior season.

The Glens Falls native injured his quad in a workout with the New York Knicks on Friday.

Fredette and the Cougars will play a regular season game against the University of Vermont at the Glens Falls Civic Center during the 2010-11 season.

Both players had until Saturday's 5 p.m. deadline to withdraw their names or remain eligible for the 2010 NBA Draft, which takes place June 24 at Madison Square Garden.

Glens Falls native Fredette on SI.com

I had a chance to cover Glens Falls native Jimmer Fredette a couple of times during his high school career.

It's great that he is doing so well at BYU in his sophomore season.

Fredette and the Cougars will kick off NCAA Tournament coverage tomorrow when they take on ninth-seed Texas A&M at 12:30.

The story also mentions former Section II standout and current Penn State guard Talor Battle and the Albany City Rocks.
