GAMEDAY: UAlbany at George Mason

Courtesy UAlbany Athletics
I'm literally just getting my first look at the University at Albany's boxscore, from tonight's game against Monmouth.

The Great Danes clobbered the Hawks 85-49.

How about the night for junior college transfer Jayson Guerrier (left).

Some very good players might never have a night where they go 9-for-10 from the floor, including hitting five treys, finishing with a career-high 28 points, while also grabbing 10 rebounds.

That's what Guerrier did tonight.

So far it looks like coach Will Brown has struck gold with JuCo transfers Guerrier and Gerardo Suero, who was named America East Player of the Week, but only scored 16 points on Monday (that's his lowest total of his college career).

Mike Black added nine points and nine assists, while Ralph Watts scored 12 points, off the bench. It was a quiet night for Logan Aronhalt, who fouled out with just five points.

Courtesy UAlbany Athletics
The Great Danes seem to be getting harder and harder to try and scout because they've had five players (Suero, Guerrier, Watts, Black, Aronhalt) score in double figures already this season and they still aren't totally healthy.

UAlbany (2-2) will be run in to much more of a test on Tuesday, when they take on the host Patriots from George Mason (3-2).

Ryan Pearson is averaging 20.8 points per game, while Vertrail Vaughns is averaging 15.0 points and Sherrod Wright is checking in at 11.8 points per game.

The Patriots are coached by former Siena coach Paul Hewitt, who is in his first season after being fired from Georgia Tech.

The way UAlbany is playing this should be a good game.

Siena headed out on the road, on Friday, for the team's first road trip.

The Mountaineers are coached by former Siena assistant Robert Burke, who was in Loudonville under Paul Hewitt, from 1997-2000.

The Saints hope to have senior Owen Wignot available. Wignot suffered a head injury in Wednesday's season-opener against Navy.

Here is a link to the game advance, which appeared in Saturday's paper.

The last time these two teams played, was back in 2010.

Siena had to rally, scoring the final seven points of regulation, to post a 79-76 overtime victory, in Albany.

Ryan Rossiter scored a game-high 29 points, while grabbing 13 rebounds. Alex Franklin added 17 points and 16 rebounds for the Saints.

Siena failed to make a 3-pointer in the game, snapping a streak a 536 games,, dating back to Jan. 15. 1992, with at least one trey made.

Hewitt remembers Siena well

It wasn't long after Georgia Tech wrapped up their 67-54 victory over Richmond on Saturday that coach Paul Hewitt was instructing his players to keep their focus in front of them.

That's because he knows all about the Siena program, which he was at the head of from 1997-2000.

“You really learn how to run a basketball program being at Siena,” Hewitt said. “Because you deal with so many entities that are really important to your success. It’s a great program.”

Hewitt told his players that Siena wouldn't be in awe of a bigger school coming into town and that the crowd will be raucous at what he still calls the Knickerbocker Arena.

He remembered a game in particular that he credited the win to the huge crowd Siena routinely draws.

The team was playing in the last MAAC Tournament game of the night, in Albany and down five to Canisius.

They rallied to send the game to overtime and then advance to the championship game, against Iona.

"We don't do that unless the crowd is behind us," Hewitt said.

Hewitt said he was usually the last one to leave the arena and he remembers the feelings after big victories.

When I talked to Hewitt on Monday, he didn't have to be reminded about Siena's personnel.

He said he watched the Minnesota game where Clarence Jackson scored a game-high 29 points.

"If we don't do a good enough job on him, he'll make you pay," Hewitt said.

Hewitt also said that after last year's game, he told Siena Athletic Director John D'Argenio that he thought Ryan Rossiter could play at any level of college ball, which is also the same way he felt about Ronald Moore.

"I don't know if (Rossiter) could do it when he first stepped on campus, but certainly he's developed into one of the elite players in college basketball."

Note: Both Rossiter and Jackson are questionable for Wednesday's game. Rossiter is dealing with a sinus infection and Jackson tweaked his ankle during Monday's practice.

Danes eager for shot at the Mount

ALBANYBlake Metcalf and the rest of the University at Albany men’s basketball team is anxious to get on the floor tonight.

That’s partly because the Great Danes have won four of their last five games and partly because the team has had a week off to finish their final exams.

“You just want to get out on the court and play against somebody else,” Metcalf said. “With all the hours we put in the library, studying and the hours against each other this week, because it’s been a long five days of practice against each other, so we’re ready to go out and play against somebody else.”

UAlbany’s sophomore captain and the rest of his teammates trade in the books for the basketball tonight, when they take on Mount St. Mary’s at 7 p.m., at SEFCU Arena.

The Great Danes (5-6) take on the Mountaineers (3-7), after one of their longest stretches of the season without a game.

“It’s a tough week,” said UAlbany coach Will Brown, referring to finals week.

The Great Danes took Sunday and Monday off, after their one-point victory over Central Connecticut last Saturday, but practiced hard the rest of the week.

“We’ve had some tough practices,” said sophomore guard Logan Aronhalt. “But guys are confident and we’re playing well.”

With a win this evening, UAlbany could come within one victory of last year’s entire season total.

The Great Danes would also reach the .500 mark for the first time since they were 3-3, after six games last season.

“We were never really at that point last season, maybe after six games,” Aronhalt said. “Now, we’re almost halfway through (the season). I think if we could get to .500, it would be a huge confidence boost for us.”

Despite Coach Brown’s feelings against playing zone defense, UAlbany will continue to play that style of basketball.

“It’s what we need to do to be successful,” he said. “I don’t like it, but it’s not going to do me any good to be stubborn. I’ve got to put us in the best position to possibly win.”

The Great Danes have been playing much better defensively, thanks to the zone.

“We put a lot of time into it,” Aronhalt said. “We watch a lot of film on it. We just keep getting better every day.”

The team struggled against Iona because of their transition defense, but they have been in every game since the Nov. 23 game against the Gaels.

“We’re committed to it,” Brown said. “We’re going to stick with it as long as it allows to be successful. We have to look at our personnel and be true about out strengths and weaknesses. We have to play this way defensively for this team to be successful consistently.”

Mount St. Mary’s is a strong defensive team.

“They’re good defensively,” Brown said. “That keeps them in a lot of games.”

The Mountaineers are coached by former Siena assistant Robert Burke (1997-2000), who is in his first season in Emmitsburg, Md.

Burke coached under current Georgia Tech coach Paul Hewitt, with the Saints.

Junior guard Lamar Trice (12.3 ppg) and senior forward Shawn Atupem (11.7 ppg) are the Mountaineers’ leading scorers.

Last season, Atupem scored nine points as the Mount almost knocked off Siena on the Saints’ home floor, before falling 79-76 in overtime.

The Mountaineers lost their three highest scorers from that game to graduation and have struggled with a difficult schedule.

“We have to work on our defense and really make sure to keep them in front of us because they have struggled at times shooting,” Metcalf said.

Brown thinks his team has started to turn the corner and they are a “solid” bunch.

“We’re a good team, but we still have a long ways to go,” Metcalf said. “We don’t want to be a team that peaks in December. We want to be a team that peaks in early March, at tournament time.”

Hewitt: "The worst coach in the country"

I included a quote from Atlanta Journal Constitution columnist Mark Bradley, when he referred to Georgia Tech coach Paul Hewitt (who coached Siena from 1997-2000), as the "worst coach in the country."

Bradley went on to rip even more into Hewitt. The Yellow Jackets play UAlbany tonight at 7:30 p.m.

Here is the link.

I didn't cover Hewitt and have spoken with him only briefly, but I find it hard to believe he's the worst coach in America.

Saints bball release non-conf sked for 2010-11

Just two days after UAlbany released their non-conference basketball schedule for the upcoming season, Siena follows suit.

It's listed below.

Obviously the games that jump out are the game against national finalist Butler (Nov. 23) and the visit from ACC foe Georgia Tech (Dec. 22) and former Siena coach Paul Hewitt.

Also, a trip to Minnesota (Nov. 15) and Princeton (Nov. 28), while the season opener will be against Vermont (Nov. 13), in downtown Albany.

The team also has the obligatory (I say sarcastically) trip to Philadelphia, when the team takes on St. Joseph's, on New Year's Eve.

Here is the entire schedule.

Nov. 15 (Mon.) at Minnesota
Nov. 20 (Sat.) at Northeastern

Hewitt turns down St. John's

According to multiple sources, including the New York Post and ESPN, former Siena coach Paul Hewitt has turned down St. John's offer to become their head coach and will remain in Atlanta at Georgia Tech.

St. John's is apparently now looking at Virginia Tech coach Seth Greenberg or Cornell coach Steve Donahue.

Expect cuurent Siena coach Fran McCaffery's name to get brought up as well.

McCaffery had come forward to say that rumors about the possibility he would be meeting with Georgia Tech to be just that, rumors.

Siena vs. Hewitt

Former Siena coach Paul Hewitt will take on the Saints Wednesday night in Atlanta.

I had the chance to speak with Hewitt last week and it was a great conversation about the time he spent coaching Siena.

“There are a lot of things that I learned how to manage as a head coach there at Siena, where I don’t think I would have had that opportunity at many places around the country,” said Hewitt.

You can tell that Hewitt has a great deal of respect for what current coach Fran McCaffery has done in a one-bid league.

It's a little ironic how McCaffery and Hewitt's career at Siena began - taking a team with not much success and turning them around very quickly.

The only difference is that McCaffery has stayed a little longer, but Hewitt said it was going to take a terrific opportunity for him to leave Loudonville.

“It was going to take a really special place for me to leave Siena,” he said, which is what was represented by coaching in the ACC against teams like Duke and North Carolinia on a consistent basis. “I was not just going to take any old job because that’s how much I thought of being up in that area."

Had he stayed at Siena a little longer, it would have been interesting to have seen if something similar to what is happening now, had occurred then.

Hewitt didn't have a negative word to say about Siena, the job or the community.

“The only people that really don’t recognize how great of a job that is, is the national media,” Hewitt said. “It’s a great job.”

While the Yellow Jackets have struggled recently, having a great freshman class and some key returning players puts them on the precipice of another great season and that would mean Hewitt would return to Albany next season to take on Siena at home.

SI: Siena in at No. 20

While the Siena Saints missed out on the Top 25 poll for the first week, Sports Illustrated recognized the two-time defending MAAC Champions as the No. 20 team in their first Power Rankings.

Siena is after No. 19 Dayton and before No. 21 Mississippi State.

Fran McCaffery's club, which was picked to win a third consecutive conference crown on Tuesday, starts the season ahead of such team as Georgia Tech and former Siena coach Paul Hewitt, Louisville, Florida and UCLA (oh, and ahead of Syracuse, which didn't make the top 32).

You can read the article here.

Saints schedule released

While there may not be a Kansas or Pittsburgh on the schedule this season, the Siena men's basketball team should be put to the test by the likes of Temple, St. John's and Georgia Tech.

Fran McCaffery's club is coming off two consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament and expectations couldn't be higher, especially since the school gave him a new eight-year extension back in April.

The team kicks off the season in Nashville, Tenn. against Tennessee State on Nov. 13 before opening up against Northeastern in what is rumored to be a nationally televised game on Tuesday, Nov. 17.

Two major highlights will be the trip to Atlanta to face former Siena coach Paul Hewitt and the Yellow Jackets on Dec. 2 and the annual game against crosstown rival UAlbany on Saturday, Dec. 5.

Saints schedule Georgia Tech

According to various sources, the Siena men's basketball team as inked a team from the ACC to add to its schedule for the upcoming 2009-10 season.

The Saints will travel to Atlanta to take on Georgia Tech and former coach Paul Hewitt.

The deal apparently will give Siena a home game in the 2010-11 season before again heading to Atlanta for an away game in 2011-12.

Also, Yellow Jackets reserve Brad Sheehan, a Shaker High graduate, will be a senior when the series returns to Albany in the 2010-11 season.
